“Not much is known about the times before these.

Few tales are passed down about what the world was like prior to its torment – only that the gods lived in the heavens. They loved their children, but like all siblings they fought.

The war in heaven was mirrored by war below and these wars raged for decades. The devout of the gods divided up the lands as trophies of their conflict… but then something changed.

The mortals below suddenly found themselves shunned by the gods.

Then came the torment, birthing the unholy forces into the world and inflicting annihilation. A veil fell over the heavens, silencing the cries of the faithful and blinding the Gods to the plight of the world below. The unholy forces plunged the fragile world into peril. One by one settlements began to wither before their unrelenting force.

As time inched by, all that remained was myth and tales as mortal life teetered on the edge of obliteration.

Until now…

Word creeps quietly across the lands, of a place dubbed the Iris of the Ancients, the centre of the world. It is here where it is rumoured that the gods may again answer prayers for salvation.

It’s suggested that all who can travel should head towards the hope it provides.”

Setting Overview

The prose above neatly describes what is commonly known by most starting characters. Added to this each warband may have more detail on their specific history and deities and a brief overview of each warband and the common deities can be found on the Known Warbands & Known Deities pages.

The events occur in a setting similar to dark ages Europe where the gods have woken from a long sleep following the fall of the previous Dominion. The lands are plagued by dark and unholy creatures and people lock themselves indoors at night.

Following the awakening of the gods, strangers have started arriving from foreign lands with exotic garb and customs, and those strong in various bloodlines have come out of hiding.

The lands are loosely divided into north, south, east and west with the event occurring roughly in the middle. Political groupings and alliances did not exist for any but the closest groups during the dark times, but that is all changing now the gods have awoken (see Culture and Bloodlines for more details).

Given the dark age setting weaponry, armour and clothing is generally fairly crude. Remnants of more advanced (or exotic) cultures do exist but will generally be rare. Anachronistic elements like guns, power armour or modern dress are not acceptable. Anything pre-renaissance is likely to be acceptable (see Weapons Guidelines for more details).
